Bereaved Parents in Peterborough and Hinchingbrooke to get the specialist support they need thanks to our new partnership with North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.

We are delighted to announce a new partnership with North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust (NWAFT) to deliver our specialist counselling service to bereaved parents who have received their care at Peterborough City or Hinchingbrooke Hospitals.

The vital specialist support that is so often needed by parents following pregnancy and baby loss is not currently available through the NHS. The impact of missing out on this care is frequently devastating for bereaved parents, affecting their ability to continue with their day-to-day lives, often unable to return to work for many weeks, as they struggle to come to terms with their grief and the implications for their future.

Petals provide a vital service that steps in to bridge this gap and deliver crucial support that transforms lives following unimaginable loss and trauma. In the last year alone, we accepted referrals from 1125 bereaved parents and delivered 5098 counselling sessions.

As a Cambridge based charity, being able to support bereaved parents in the local area has been a high priority for us and as such, we are delighted to be able to announce this new partnership.

Petals CEO and Founder, Karen Burgess was keen to highlight how much it means to be able to support bereaved families in the local area, saying: “We are proud to announce our partnership with NWAFT to provide our much-needed specialist baby loss counselling service for parents receiving their care at both Hinchingbrooke and Peterborough Hospitals. As a Cambridgeshire based charity, it is important to Petals to be able to support bereaved parents in our local area – we are thankful that funding to support our work has now been negotiated through North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust and we can now be there for bereaved parents as they experience the tragedy of pregnancy and baby loss.”

Lesley Carline, NWAFT’s Bereavement Specialist Midwife was clearly delighted to announce the partnership: I am absolutely overwhelmed to be able to say that finally, NWAFT is able to work in partnership with Petals to ensure that bereaved women and couples who are cared for through our maternity bereavement service are able to access the standard of psychological support that they deserve. Being able to offer specialist counselling following perinatal loss is a vital part of assisting parents to navigate their onward journey by supporting their mental and emotional health, and our partnership means that we can now fulfil this need for those who wish to benefit from this.
