Fifteen years of giving parents hope after baby loss. Of creating space to talk openly and be heard. Of making sense of the unimaginable. Of finding the strength to try again, and the courage to move forward.Ā
Petals began with theĀ belief that parentsĀ shouldnātĀ go through the trauma of babyĀ loss alone. OurĀ founder, who was a bereavement counsellorĀ in a maternity hospital,Ā recognisedĀ that specialistĀ psychological support should beĀ available for allĀ parents inĀ the daysĀ and weeks after their loss. OneĀ friend agreed and donated our first £200. From this smallĀ seedĀ somethingĀ very specialĀ grew.Ā Ā
Ā
That was fifteen years ago. Since then, 34 hospital partnerships are now in operation and more than 12,500 parents have beenĀ supported through one ofĀ theĀ hardest experiences imaginable by our specialist counselling.Ā Ā Ā Ā
Ā
ButĀ the need is greater than ever.Ā
Every four minutesĀ a baby will be miscarried, stillborn or die shortly after birth.Ā
That means 590 parents a day are impacted by baby loss.
Today, 1 in 2 referrals to Petals Counselling are turned away, because of insufficient funding.
These are devastating statistics. We have the expertise, experience and the ability to support parents through the most difficult time in their life, but not the means.
As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, you can help us reach more bereaved parents and provide them with the specialist trauma support what we know is needed, and as one client described āa gateway back to lifeā.

How your donation will help:
It costs us Ā£500 to fully fund a couple through Petals Counselling. Every Ā£15 donated, or raised through the 15 for 15 Challenge, will mean we can say āyesā to more parents.
Holding both parents
When a much-longed for baby dies, both parents feel it. Often, they feel it differently. With Petals, both parents are heard, each perspective listened to, their trauma acknowledged, processed, learned from and understood.
āMy counsellor really helped my husband to talk and get things out which has been a real struggle before. She has bought us closer together and helped us to process what has happened, together.ā
āWe could explore our complex emotions and our counsellor created the most beautiful, safe space where we felt safe to be honest and vulnerable.ā
Removing judgement
When face-to-face with a Petals Counsellor, parents find a safe space to articulate thoughts they cannot share elsewhere. They are met with compassion and understanding. Their grief and complex feelings are not belittled or dismissed. They are listened to and heard by unbiased, experienced and open-minded Petals Counsellors, who, quite simply, get it. Ā
Recognising the baby lost
Walking into a hospital pregnant and leaving without a baby, where the world continues as normal, is devastating. We give parents time to tell us all about their baby. Everything they know, experienced, wished for, will never know, see or feel. Their existence is real and we help parents keep their memories alive.Ā
āOur counselling was one of the few people that truly embraced our little girlās existence and purpose.ā
Demanding expertise
Baby loss is a specific kind of trauma, and it deserves specialist support. Our counsellors are highly experienced and trained in trauma, grief and loss. Petals Counselling is the only service created specifically to support parents through baby loss. We provide consistently high-quality, trauma informed, expert led care.
Championing healthy ways to cope
Evidence shows that both parents are more likely to develop a mental illness following baby loss or opt for unhealthy coping mechanisms. 40% of relationships break down after baby loss. But Petals Counselling gives parents the tools to move forward in a healthy way.
Advocating for parents
Parents trust us with their stories. We turn that insight into action. That means contributing Ā to government consultations, like the one on bereavement leave following miscarriage, and representing real experiences of parents when attending the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Baby Loss. When something needs to change for bereaved parents, we make sure their voice is in the room.
āIn the fifteen years since I first started Petals, our beliefs havenāt changed We know that parents can recover their hope and find courage to continue their path to parenthood after the most devastating pregnancy loss, if they receive specialist psychological support. Petals Counselling is here for those parents, and we continue to pursue our mission to ensure every bereaved parent can access our service
āI would like to thank our astounding and ever growing network of supporters who share our beliefs and work hard to enable the expansion of our service. Everything we do at Petals is a team effort, and every member of that team is invested in creating the safe, nurturing space that is Petals. We have so much more to do, and I believe we have the drive and energy for this ā you are welcome to join us!ā
