In May 2023, Petals was commissioned by South Staffordshire Maternal Mental Health Service (LOTUS Service South) to provide a specialist online counselling service for women/birthing people and their partners residing in South Staffordshire, who are experiencing moderate to severe mental health needs as a result of pregnancy or baby loss.
Petals specialist counselling service is the next step of care for bereaved parents when they leave hospital. This service will provide these parents with the support they require following a pregnancy-related loss, improving their mental health and emotional wellbeing, and, where appropriate, assisting them to feel prepared for a future pregnancy.
The terms of this partnership state that we are able to provide funded counselling sessions to parents who have experienced any of the below within the last year:
- Early miscarriage
- Second-trimester miscarriage (14-16+ weeks)
- Terminations of pregnancy for medical reasons
- Neonatal Loss on the labour ward
- Pregnancy After Loss (You will need to have had counselling with Petals for your loss before you can request counselling for Pregnancy After Loss)
PLEASE NOTE: Referrals can only be accepted if they come directly from the LOTUS Service South Team. If you fit the above criteria, please ask your GP to make a referral for you to the LOTUS Service, and specifically mention a request for Petals Counselling. The LOTUS team will then use your referral to identify the appropriate services to support you, and they can share your details with Petals.
If your loss does not come under any of the above, it would still be hugely beneficial for both you and us if you complete our Request for Counselling Form. Our counselling coordinator will always respond to you and signpost you to other services that may be able to offer you support. Furthermore, the collation of accurate data showing how many parents need our support provides important evidence for us to take to funders as we work hard to expand our service.
